Leaves are starting to fall from the trees. Birds are starting to flock quite noticeably in the yard. To top it off.. yesterday we attended my Goddaughter’s fall sports pep rally (Go Gaels! Fight Fight Fight!)..

So with all that… the Maesters of Old Town have gathered and sent out the Ravens with the declaration that our great summer of 2026 is now…. over.

This makes me sad. I am a summer kid1. I was born in July which makes the entire month a national holiday in my mind. Summer is full of happy kid memories. No school bullies to deal with. Long days lounging in the grass. Summer camp. All the time in the world to play video games, sit at my computer, or get into whatever my latest obsession was in that moment. Even as an adult Summer meant family trips to <wherever>, BBQs with firepits, and seemingly endless possibilities of fun.

I have a whole personal diatribe about the months of the year.. which ones are my favorite and which ones I hate the most. I’ll spare you the details (for now at least) but just know.. I have very strong opinions on disliking the month of January.

But here we are.. The End. Well, maybe not quite the end. We still have some somewhat decent weather the next few weeks. September is quite exciting actually.. School starting up, Fall sports, and the beginning of the Holiday Season..

But with all that.. The Shit of Winter is on the horizon. Endless leaf cleanup in my yard till there is snow on the ground2. Jacket weather. Wet cold rain. I fucking hate it all.

Well maybe not all of it. I DO have quite a few nice memories/associations of Fall. Cross country races in high school3. Cool fire pit nights. In the early years being a PTA Dad4, or Girl Scout Dad was quite fun.

Fall is the Herald of Winter.. and when it hits January 1st it’s just nothing but shit cold and endless darkness. At least in New Jersey. I am sure the folks who have escaped to Florida will have a nice mild January with butterflies, crocodiles, and whatever else lives in those ponds all over.

Anyway.. I just felt like complaining a bit before I get into my day here. I hope you didn’t mind.

In my mind I am a perpetual kid.. I look in the mirror and still see myself as a 16 year old know nothing. I never plan to grow up either..

We have very few small trees on our property but the neighbors have tons. The trees are all sorts of types so we end up with leaves dropping from late Aug till early December. No matter how many times I go out to clean up (every weekend almost) we still end up with leaves waiting to be cleared in the following spring.

Not the running part.. as I was not a very good long distance runner. More of the being on the team and going to the parks with my friends for practice and races.

Until I got sucked into the bullshit of the 5th Grade Activities Committee and experienced some of the worst in people… resulting in me (still to this day) disliking 95% of the people who live in my town.

I went out side this morning and was met with a cool wet chill to the air.
